Lahaina History
  • Lahaina has been important in nearly every era of history. It is the former capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom from 1802 - 1845.
  • It was a whaling port from the 1820's to the 1860's.  Missionaries were also attracted to Lahaina, establishing institutions like Lahainaluna High School, the first high school West of the Rockies, and a printing press, playing a role in the development of written Hawaiian language. 
  • Lahaina became a sugar plantation town with the establishment of Pioneer Mill in 1961, and was also home to Baldwin Packers Pineapple Cannery, which is now the Lahaina Cannery Mall.  
  • Starting in the 1960's tourism grew to be a major industry with visitors drawn to Lahaina's beautiful setting and historic buildings. 
  • In the 1990's it was a top destination for art with many art galleries lining its historic Front Street. 
  • August 8th, 2023 wind-driven wildfires on the island of Maui destroyed more than 2,200 structures and caused about $5.5 billion in damages. Lahaina Town was the most impacted area.
